How the calculator works

Each block pays the subsidy plus the fees of its transactions, and a miner's expected share is its hash rate against the work the network needs per block. At difficulty D a block takes D × 232 hashes on average, so a machine of h hashes a second expects h × 86,400 ÷ (D × 232) blocks a day. We take D from our own Bitcoin node at its latest block, the subsidy of the next block and the mean fees per block of the last week (1,008 blocks), times our latest BTC price. Revenue is then reduced by the pool fee and the uptime; electricity is power × 24 hours × uptime × your price per kWh.

Cost to mine 1 BTC is the electricity for the hours it takes to earn one; the break-even power price is what a kilowatt-hour would have to cost for revenue and electricity to match. Solo mining is a lottery: the chance of finding at least one block in a day is 1 − e−blocks a day. All of this is the expected value at today's difficulty: difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks, fees and the price move every day, and actual pool payouts vary. Hardware, hosting, cooling, financing and taxes are not included. Machine figures are the manufacturers' nominal ratings, the same ones our mining scenario charts use.

Questions

How much does it cost to mine 1 bitcoin?

In electricity alone, about $38,739 with an S21 XP at $0.05 per kWh after a 2% pool fee, at today's difficulty, fees and price (8 Nov 2026); an older S9 needs about $281,218. Buying one costs $74,391.

Is Bitcoin mining profitable right now?

At $0.05 per kWh, 3 of the 6 machines in the table earn more than their electricity before pool fees; their break-even power prices run from $0.013 to $0.139 per kWh. Hardware and hosting come on top.

What is hashprice?

The expected revenue of a unit of hash rate for a day: today $31.74 per PH/s (0.00043 BTC), from difficulty, the block reward of 3.147 BTC with fees, and the price. It falls when difficulty rises and when the price or fees fall.

What are my chances of solo mining a block?

With one S21 XP (270 TH/s) at today's difficulty, about 1 in 27,874 on any day, or one block every 76 years on average. Pools exist to turn that lottery into a steady share.

Does the calculator include the cost of the machine?

No. It counts electricity only. Hardware, hosting, cooling, repairs, financing and taxes are left out, so a machine that clears its power bill can still lose money overall.
