Each holder's own figure: companies from their SEC filings (Metaplanet from its Tokyo Stock Exchange disclosures), funds from their issuers' files or SEC reports, exchanges and El Salvador from their wallets on our node, the US and UK from official documents. Mining pools are counted only together (above).
The free float
- 13,851,853 BTC is the free float on 8 Nov 2026: the 20,109,495 BTC our node counts as spendable, less the 3,595,622 unmoved for 10 years or more, the 1,269,807 in US spot ETFs, the 1,196,111 in company treasuries and the 196,101 governments hold.
- That is 66.0% of the 21 million. Exchanges' coins count in the float: they belong to their customers and trade every day.
How each coin is counted once
- A coin is counted once, in the first band that holds it: exchanges, wrapped-bitcoin custody, mining pools and El Salvador at their wallets on our node; then what ETFs, companies and governments state they hold; then coins unmoved for 10 years or more at any other wallet; then everyone else.
- Coins at least 10 years old that sit at the attributed wallets stay with their holder: 513.03 BTC on 8 Nov 2026, plus at most 0.10 BTC at wallets that have spent coins since, which we also count with their holder. So no coin is in two bands.
- ETFs, companies and governments state their holdings without addresses, so we cannot see their coins' age. The funds launched in 2024, the companies' figures come from purchases since 2020, and the governments' coins moved when they were seized, so none of them should be among the coins unmoved for 10 years.
- Not mined yet is 21,000,000 less the bitcoin issued so far. It includes the block rewards some miners never claimed (28.96 BTC by block 975,026), which can never be issued, and the 0.0231 BTC by which the issuance schedule falls short of 21 million.
What the split leaves out
- Exchanges that publish no addresses (Coinbase and Kraken among them) are in "everyone else", so the exchange band is smaller than all exchanges together.
- cbBTC's custody is not counted separately: we have no source of its custody addresses that we can read, so those coins are in "everyone else".
- Funds outside the US, private companies and companies that do not file with the US SEC (Metaplanet aside) are in "everyone else"; so are the US government's coins from seizures with no official current figure.
- Unmoved for 10 years or more is coin age, not proof that coins are lost or a claim about whose they are. It includes the coins mined in bitcoin's first years.
- Figures carry their own dates: an ETF file is a day old, a company filing can be months old, and official government figures change only when a new document is published.

Sources and licence
Computed every hour from our own Bitcoin node and the sources named in the key. Each holder's figure is the one its source gives: wallets on our node, issuers' daily holdings files, filings with the US SEC and the Tokyo Stock Exchange, official government documents. Nothing is estimated to fill a gap: a holder without a source is in "everyone else".
